• Chef James Syhabout is a Lao-Thai (his mother is Thai, his father is Laotian) who was born in Ubonratchathani, Thailand, and raised in Oakland, California. His restaurant, Commis, is the only restaurant in Oakland to receive a Michelin star since 2010. Hawker Fare, which has locations in both Oakland and San Francisco, and the laid-back, beer-focused The Dock in West Oakland are also owned and operated by James Syhabout. In addition to being honored for his talent and commitment to the culinary arts, Syhabout was named "Best New Chef" by the aforementioned Food & Wine magazine in 2010 for revitalizing the dining scene in his hometown of Oakland.
